I took 3/4" PVC pipe and drilled it through every 1/2" or so. I drilled above the height of the filter material. At first I didn't go that high. The filter material loaded up with crud, the overflows filled up and didn't allow any water to get to the wet/dry. I realized something was wrong when I smelled my brand new
